Our Experience with USAA

In the last year we had 4 accidents. None were our fault. I was in the car when I was hit for the first accident. That guy was uninsured. 2 of the accidents were hit and run (our cars were parked and someone hit them and left). Someone left a note for the 4th accident. For each accident, we called USAA on the same day of the accident. They put us in the system. The claims rep asked how we wanted to communicate. We said e-mail. So we e-mailed back and forth. They asked us to pick a repair shop, which we did. The repair shop decided what the charge would be and gave USAA and us an estimate. USAA sent the repair shop a check, less our deductible. (We could have had the check sent to us, and then decide how to spend it ourselves. We did this for an accident a few years ago, and we ended up not having the body work done since the car was so old. So we made $ on that accident.) We also got a rental car, which was covered by our policy, so no out of pocket charges for that. They paid the rental car company directly, so we didn't have to do anything but go over there and get the rental car. We were regularly emailing back and forth with our claims rep during this time. Then they called us a couple weeks after all the repairs were made to follow up to make sure all went ok. One of the accidents was out of town and we called back and forth (instead of email) but it was very easy to deal with USAA. With 5 cars and 4 drivers we have to have a good insurance company, and USAA has never let us down. I asked them if our insurance rates would go up (especially for the hit and run and the uninsured guy) and I was told no, because none of these accidents were our fault. We have found them to be fair, and very quick with sending the checks for repairs. One of the accidents was when the claims rep was going on vacation, but she made sure we knew who would be handling our claim while she was out of town, and that guy knew all about us. She gave us his contact info and etc., and gave him our info. So we never felt like we were mishandled or anything. After reading the other reviews, I guess it depends on who you get for a claim rep, but we have never been treated rudely or anything like that. I know it is traumatic to be in a car when it is hit, which is how it was for me in the first accident. I felt like I could barely function or communicate. I received very kind and understanding, yet all-business treatment when I called USAA, which I think was very necessary in order to get it all taken care of. We have had 5 or 6 other accidents over the years since we have been with USAA, and our experience with USAA has always been the same: fair, thorough and quick settlement. We have no complaints.
